I am honoured to be asked to pay tribute to this scholar, human rights activist, poet and musician. I am indebted to a Palestinian American whose vision for a common humanity knew no boundaries, whose creativity ; in writing, in social action and in music ; was sustained by his courage, who knew that those who are committed to universal human rights could never ignore the cause of peace with justice for Palestinians. Those three qualities ; his emphasis on the responsibilities of an intellectual in public life, his courage and his struggle for justice for Palestinians - are the focus of my tribute.
